ABQ to revamp bicycle laws
ALBUQUERQUE LEADERS SAY ITS TIME FOR A CHANGE-- WHEN IT COMES TO CARS AND BICYCLISTS SHARING THE ROAD EIGHT BICYCLISTS HAVE BEEN KILLED IN LESS THAN FOUR YEARS-- AND THE CITY SAYS THAT S A FRIGHTENING ISSUE THAT MUST BE ADDRESSED SHELTON DODSON IS LIVE NEAR U-N-M WITH MORE ON SWEEPING CHANGES TO MAKE THE DUKE CITY ONE OF THE SAFEST FOR BICYCLISTS IN THE NATION SHELTON AT LEAST THAT IS THE HOPE TODAY THE CITY ANNOUNCED PLANS TO REVAMP LAWS REGARDING BICYCLISTS AND MOTORISTS SHARING THE SAME STREET AND THOSE WHO PUSH THE PEDALS ACROSS THE PAVEMENT SAY IT S ABOUT TIME Albuquerque to be safe As Albuq AND THOSE CYCLISTS WHO JOINED MAYOR MARTIN CHAVEZ TODAY WANT THE SAME BUT THEY SAY ride on ONE OF THEM -- IS ONE THAT IS USED THE MOST -- CENTRAL AVENUE Central is suicide on a bicycle Why is it suicide Because you are caught between traffic and cars that are opening doors and there is no room for a bike lane BEN SAVOCA BIKES ABOUT 100 MILES A WEEK AND HE S HAD A LOT OF CLOSE CALLS I don t want to say that Albuquerque is a bad place to bike because compared to a lot of places it is terrific But we have a long way to go educating motorists and cyclists on how to interact with one another NEW MEXICO NOW RANKS AS 12TH WORST WHEN IT COMES TO BICYCLE FATALITIES PER CAPITA THERE HAVE BEEN EIGHT BICYCLISTS KILLED IN THE CITY IN FOUR YEARS SOME WHERE MOTORISTS WERE TOO BLAME AND SOME WHERE BICYCLISTS WERE AT FAULT THE MOST RECENT DEATH -- 43-YEAR- OLD ROY SEKRETA KILLED INSTANTLY WHEN HE TRIED TO CROSS COMANCHE THREE WEEKS AGO ON HIS WAY HOME FROM WORK It s a tragedy when ever a cyclist is killed And it s a message to us that the systems as it is isn t working THE CITY ALSO PLANS A BIKE SAFETY MEDIA CAMPAIGN AND ON SENDING A- P-D OFFICERS TO SCHOOLS TO TEACH BIKE SAFETY
